The most famous guitar recording in jazz history — Django's archtop acoustic through a small Stimer pickup and a tiny amp creates the warm, resonant tone that became the template for gypsy jazz. He played with only two functional fingers on his left hand after a caravan fire, yet produced the most fluid melodic lines of the swing era.

Primarily acoustic — Django's tone comes from the Selmer Maccaferri guitar's unique spruce top and internal resonator. When amplified, the Stimer pickup adds minimal coloration, preserving the acoustic character. Bright and resonant with no amp distortion.
Technique
How to Play It
Rest-stroke melody picking with two-finger left hand — Django played all chord shapes and melodic lines using only his index and middle finger (the ring and little finger were paralysed). His right-hand rest-stroke picking drives the melody note firmly into the adjacent string for volume and projection.
Budget Alternative
Achievable With
Selmer or Maccaferri-style gypsy jazz guitar (Gitane, Dell'Arte) → acoustic or through a Stimer pickup → no effects whatsoever. The tone is entirely in the instrument — a standard electric guitar through an amp cannot replicate it.
