The floating vibrato tailpiece adds pitch instability that becomes part of the sonic texture. He uses many different Jazzmasters, each tuned to a specific Sonic Youth tuning.

Used alongside the Jazzmaster for specific tunings — the Mustang's shorter scale length and dynamic vibrato system suit different alternate-tuning applications than the Jazzmaster's longer scale.

Telecaster used for more conventionally tuned material — provides a harder bridge tone for specific riff-based passages within the Sonic Youth catalog.

The Marshall Super Lead at high volumes creates the feedback sustain and harmonic overtones central to Moore's compositional approach. He uses the amp's gain to sustain chosen feedback pitches — the amplifier is as much an instrument as the guitar.

Used for cleaner, more extended-sustain passages where the Marshall's gain would overpower the tonal choices in the alternate tunings — the Twin's clean platform lets the tuning's specific intervals emerge clearly.

The Rat is Moore's primary gain pedal — its filter control allows adjustment from bright to dark saturation, and it interacts with alternate tunings differently from a conventional distortion, preserving the unusual harmonic intervals within the distortion structure.

Big Muff for thicker, more sustained fuzz — used for specific passages requiring the Big Muff's long sustain and softer clipping characteristic.

Delay for feedback manipulation and ambient texture — set for longer delay times that allow feedback notes to sustain and interact with fresh playing.
